Record Sound From iplayer And Other Streaming Sources

Sometimes you need to record a source that you know is going to disappear into obscurity very soon or just will not be available at a later date. The worst of these are webinars that are played for a short time and frequently the recordings are notoriously unreliable and to revisit the page only to find a fault developed that resulted in the loss of the recording forever. Although you can record a video presentation with a software on your own pc it too can fail unexpectedly. For that purpose a free desktop video capture recording software is a risky choice but can be very effective (especially if it is a sales webinar and you want to record what was said for legal reasons)

To record from the sound card and streaming video for free I recommend Free Sound Recorder , which will record all streaming sound . I have personally tried many of the free and paid variety to find only blank mp3 , yet this worked perfectly and with excellent sound quality.

On Installation choose custom and remove the shareware option at the bottom unless you want to give it a try. Personally I prefer to find free alternatives rather than sharewares that may not work.

After installation you must go to audio devices (right click on the speaker icon in the task bar bottom right) and select open volume control, advanced and select input and there select stereo mix. You can also select properties and this will give you a list of audio cards and select properties and tick the stereo mix box.

It is important that the stereo mix is selected and it is not muted (untick box in the corner)

In vista and win7 you can find these options in control panel.

When the program starts a twin level bar will light up and respond to the sound level. You are ready to go!

No VU level means there is no sound to record.
